Introducing your friends to the world of DANCE
NSS and the Dance Open House
Dance Open House events are part of Next Step Socials.
They are held approximately every eight weeks, usually around the beginning of a new class cycle. They give people living near each dance location an opportunity to try beginner lessons, visit the venue, and decide whether dance may be right for them.
You may discover a new activity you love. You may simply enjoy getting out, moving, and trying something different.
Every Dance Open House is an NSS event, but not every NSS event is an Open House.
Why We Created Next Step Socials
Flying Dance Community has been helping people connect through social dance since 2004.
NSS gives beginners a smaller, more comfortable place to build confidence before attending larger dance events. It also gives people in communities outside major cities somewhere local to move, meet, and spend meaningful time with friends and family.
You do not have to decide whether you want to become a dancer.
Come to one event. Try a lesson. Meet a few people. Then decide what your next step will be.

FAQs | Next Step Socials (NSS)
Do I need a partner?
No. You are welcome to attend alone, with a partner, or with friends and family.
During the lessons, we normally rotate partners so participants can meet and dance with different people, but rotation is always optional. You may stay with the person you came with or choose not to rotate.
Can complete beginners attend?
Absolutely. Next Step Socials are designed to be welcoming to complete beginners, including people who have never taken a dance class before.
The lessons are taught step by step in a relaxed environment. There is no pressure to perform, keep up with experienced dancers, or get every step right.
Current students and returning dancers also attend, which helps create a friendly community where people at different stages can learn and practise together.
What should I wear to class?
Wear comfortable, casual clothing that allows you to move easily. Track pants, jeans, dresses, T-shirts, and everyday casual clothing are all welcome.
You do not need dance shoes. Choose clean, comfortable footwear that stays securely on your feet and allows you to move safely. Avoid shoes with heavy grips, loose sandals, or footwear that may mark the floor.
Bring water and, when possible, a change of shirt if you expect to dance for the full evening.
What is a Dance Open House?
A Dance Open House is a special introductory Next Step Social designed especially for people who are new to Flying Dance Community.
Open House events are generally held approximately every eight weeks in participating communities, usually around the beginning of a new class cycle.
They give local residents an opportunity to try beginner-friendly dance lessons, visit the dance space, meet the instructors and community, and decide whether dance is something they would enjoy.
Every Dance Open House is part of Next Step Socials, but not every Next Step Social is an Open House.
Are Next Step Socials part of my class package?
Yes. Next Step Socials are built into the FDComm class experience for students with an active class package.
They give you regular opportunities to practise what you are learning, meet dancers from other classes and levels, connect with the wider community, and introduce a first-time guest, such as a friend or family member.
Rather than separating classes from social dancing, FDComm brings them together to help build a more connected and supportive dance community.
Can I attend only one lesson or the social?
Yes. You can choose the option that best fits your interest and schedule.
Depending on the event, admission options may include:
- two lessons and the social;
- one lesson and the social;
- social dancing only.
If you are new to dance, we recommend attending the lessons because they will introduce some of the movements and help you feel more comfortable during the social.
Check the individual event listing for the exact schedule, dance styles, and admission options.
How does the first-time guest benefit work
Current registered students with an active eligible class package may bring one first-time NSS guest at no charge to an eligible event.
Your guest may be a friend, spouse, partner, family member, coworker, or someone else who would enjoy trying dance and meeting the community.
The complimentary guest benefit applies to someone attending an NSS or Dance Open House for the first time. Advance guest registration is required so we can prepare for their arrival and send them the correct event information.
After their first complimentary visit, they are welcome to return by purchasing the appropriate event pass or joining an eligible FDComm class program.
What if my guest enjoys NSS and wants to return?
After their first complimentary visit, your guest is welcome to return by purchasing the NSS option that best fits their evening: two lessons and the social, one lesson and the social, or social dancing only.
They may also join an eligible FDComm class package, which includes access to Next Step Socials while the package is active.
What age groups are welcome?
Next Step Socials are primarily designed for adults, including beginners, returning dancers, couples, and active older adults.
Younger participants may be welcome at selected events when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please review the individual event details or contact us before registering anyone under 18.
What does "conversation-friendly music" mean?
The music is kept at a comfortable level so you can enjoy dancing while still being able to talk and connect with the people around you.
NSS is not designed to feel like a loud nightclub. It is a welcoming social space where dancing and conversation can happen together.
What payment and cancellation policies apply?
Advance registration is recommended because it helps us prepare the venue, instructors, and event experience.
Event passes are valid only for the selected event unless otherwise stated. Purchases are generally non-refundable, but they may be transferred to another person or moved to another eligible NSS event when sufficient notice is provided.
If Flying Dance Community cancels or reschedules an event, your registration will be moved to another eligible event or converted to an FDComm credit of equal value.
Please review the terms shown during checkout, as special events, promotional offers, and venue-specific events may have different conditions.
